Technical Diving

What is Technical Diving?

Technical scuba diving involves going beyond recreational scuba diving limits and includes one or more of the following:

  • Diving beyond 40 metres

  • Required stage decompression

  • Diving in an overhead environment beyond 40 linear metres of the surface

  • Accelerated decompression and/or the use of variable gas mixtures during the dive

  • Use of extensive equipment and technologies

PADI TecRec courses at Aquatic Adventures

Below you will find brief introductions to the PADI TecRec courses we currently run at Aquatic Adventures.  Included in the information is some detail regarding what you will learn on the course, as well as the price per person*.

At Aquatic Adventures our prices are all inclusive - this means there are NO hidden costs, with all course specific equipment rental, boat fees, material and certification costs included.

To participate in one of our TecRec courses you must have your own full set of Technical diving gear: either a set of manifolded twin tanks with backplate & wing, or a dual-tank sidemount setup.

* PLEASE NOTE - all prices are based upon a minimum of 4 people participating in the course.  We will always endeavour to fill our courses, however in the event that a course is below minimum numbers, for it to go ahead on a given date then the cost would need to go up to cover Instructor wages.  We will always inform all students in advance if this might happen and offer the opportunity to switch course dates if they do not wish to pay the extra cost.

DISCOVER TEC

Curious about technical (tec) diving, but not sure about jumping into a course?  Discover Tec is a short confined water experience that allows you to give technical diving a try. You get to wear all the extra tec diving gear and take it for a test dive.

Your PADI Tec Instructor may introduce a few basic skills, such as primary to secondary regulator switch and gas shutdown procedures.

TEC 40 DIVER

The PADI Tec 40 course is where you transition from recreational scuba diving to technical diving. It’s a great place to start because it’s the first subdivision of the full PADI Tec Diver course and bridges the gap between no stop diving and full technical deep decompression diving.

You will qualify to make limited decompression dives to 40 metres, and learn to use a full Technical Scuba Diving set up.

TEC 50 DIVER

The third part of the full PADI Tec Deep Diver program is Tec 50.  As a Tec 50 diver, you show that you’ve developed competency as a tec diver and have the skills to dive to a maximum of 50 metres.  You know how to make extended, accelerated decompression stops using up to two gases.

It’s not easy to reach this level and earning your Tec 50 certification opens the door to deeper diving expeditions.

TEC 45 DIVER

The PADI Tec 45 course is the second part of the full PADI Tec Deep Diver program. Building on what you learned in the Tec 40 course, you focus on the function and maintenance of tec diving equipment and associated issues. You continue fine-tuning gas planning and calculating accelerated decompression stops.  You’ll extend your depth limit to 45 metres and learn to plan and execute repetitive decompression dives using a single stage/decompression cylinder.  You’ll also make accelerated decompression dives using EANx or pure oxygen.

TEC DEEP COMBO

With the possibility of combining skills from dives to ensure a more streamlined course, coupled with a reduction in theory repetition, this option appeals to many divers who are keen to progress quickly with their Tec diving.

Please be aware that you cannot progress from one level to the next without satisfactorily completing the necessary skills & knowledge development, so signing up for the combo course does not guarantee you quicker course completion - how well you learn and progress will depend entirely on how much time you invest in practicing and in your own studies.

TRIMIX GAS BLENDER

The PADI Enriched Air Diver course is the most popular diver specialty course and the number of technical divers is on the rise, which means that lots of scuba divers want enriched air and gas blends.

The Tec-Rec Trimix Gas Blender course teaches you to blend enriched air nitrox and helium-blend gases.  Being a blender is a key job at a busy Dive Centre, and your work allows other divers to do what they love to do – scuba dive.

TEC SIDEMOUNT

If you’ve looked into technical diving, you realize that tec divers always wear more than one tank. Sidemount is an increasingly popular way to configure multiple cylinders for technical diving.

You can enter the world of tec diving with the Tec Sidemount Diver course and apply what you learn to other TecRec courses - your instructor may offer to integrate this course with the Tec 40Tec 45 or Tec 50 courses.
